Eight Tips to Organize Your Basement and Attic

When it comes to organizing, there are two places in your home that you would like to avoid: the attic and the basement. You might notice several horror stories about these places, insects and rodents normally set up a home there. Organizing them takes all your willpower and determination. Nevertheless, you can organize them if you set your mind to it and attack the jobs just like any other room in your house.
Here are some tips to help you in organizing the attic or the basement.

1. If you have not organized your attic or basement for some time, be prepared to go down memory lane. You will mostly find old games, photographs you have not seen in years, grandma's silver, ice skates and many other things.. Put these items in a corner until you have decided what you want to do with them.

2. Throw away outdated items, old and broken things that you will not use anymore. Purchase several storage containers, shelves and set up hooks and shelving for organizing various items. Plastic bins should be labelled. You could buy them in different colors and you can color coordinate items by designating a particular color for toys, clothing and many others.

3. Make full use of the space by hanging pegboard and hooks. Turn an unused and old bar stool upside down and put all tall items such as curtain rods and baseball bats among others inside.. Pick up a few plastic, translucent containers to store Christmas decorations and out-of-season clothing that you do not use.

4. Organizing your attic or basement is a great way for family bonding. You can ask everyone to chip in and make it a game giving tasks with an alarm clock and giving small prizes or getting the job done ahead of time. Try to play fast music to get everyone into action. You can have a pizza afterwards.

5. Refrain from holding on to little things that you come across. If you do not know what it belongs to and what it is, it is better off thrown in the trash to lessen the clutter.

6. As you rummage through, set up a large donation box to put all items that you no longer use and give it to charity or the Salvation Army the following day. You will be surprised that you can make more people happy by organizing your things and providing them with items that you may no longer use but are very useful for them.

7. The place you designated for storage should be an out of the way area. For instance, if you have laundry machines in your basement, do not put storage items in the way of the machines. This will prove to be hassle because you will have to navigate around the storage every time you do laundry.

8. Remember that basements are great for storing canned goods. If you are in a cold climate, you would probably be glad to store goods particularly on one of those cold and icy days when you would rather stay home than go out to the supermarket. Keep it well organized by using can organizers.

Organizing your basement or attic helps in making your home cozy and makes it easier to find items that you might need later on. It would also keep these places clean and spacious.
