Preparing Your Attic to Use for Storage

Preparing Your Attic to Use for Storage

If you have storage problems, check your attic. You might be able to use the space.
Many of us have issues regarding storage. This is because of the things that we have accumulated over the years but cannot let go. Most of the time, we ran out of spaces to store our items. This can lead to problems because if we lack storage space, our things will be left scattered everywhere. This often leads to unmanageable mess.

To prevent this from happening to you, you have to start thinking of ways to store your things properly. For sure, there are several unused spaces in your house. For most, they can use the attic. However, you should not just stack your items there. It is essential that you assess it first. The assessment will help you determine the benefits and potential problems of transforming it to be your storage room.

Before you prepare your attic, prepare your items first. Certainly, all the things that you have accumulated in the past years will not fit there. Since this is the case, it is time to sort through your stuff and let go of the things you will no longer use. If you have not used it in the past year, you will not probably use it again. The things that you need to store are the items you use occasionally and seasonally.

You should also prepare your attic for storage. Here is how:

1. Check for potential problems. This is very important especially if you have an unfinished attic. There could be nails protruding through the roof. Check for any leaks as well. If there are stains on the attic floor or discoloration on the surfaces, you most likely have leaks. Once you have identified the problem, deal with them right away to prevent injury and other problems when you start working in the attic.

2. Identify how much weight your attic can take. You can ask your contractor about this. You may also ask a builder who knows how to determine such weight. This is important because the floor of the attic is not intended to hold heavy objects. You will have serious problems if you place more weight than what the attic can take.

3. Ask local authorities if permits are needed. Permits are usually needed if construction needs to be altered as well as the electrical wiring.

4. Install a strong floor surface. Even if you know the weight that the attic can take, you still need to reinforce its flooring. There are ready-made floors that you can install in your attic. It reinforces your floor and provides a smooth surface to walk on.

5. Check the accessibility of the attic. Accessibility is important. You can use drop down stairs or other simple stair systems. However, if you have plans of using it often, it would be best to install sturdy and stable stairs.

It is best to contact a contractor to convert your attic if there is a lot of work to be done. Once your attic is ready, make sure that you arrange your things properly. Place your items in plastic bags and containers to prevent the dust from getting to them. Do not store items that are sensitive to temperature as well.
